Chunkers vs Blenders (thinners)

Chunkers vs Blenders (thinners)

Chunkers have made their way into the grooming industry as a viable tool for removing large quantities of fur quickly and smoothly.

They can have anywhere from 10-24 teeth, with the teeth being thick with generous spacing between them.

The wider teeth and increased spacing between teeth, cut more fur with each stroke. The teeth give the groomer more control of shaping the fur and are more forgiving than a straight edged blade used for scissoring a finish.

Chunkers are best used for removing a lot of bulk, with the option of shaping at the same time, as well as a rough blending ability.

Amazing for shaping and de-bulking the rump on double-coated dogs, removing fur on the undercarriage, trimming front feathers and shaping tails.

Chunkers will leave a natural rough blend on wired or rough coated dogs and leave a natural shaping finish.

Using chunkers under the top layer of the coat, will create a lift in the coat, with the underlayer that is cut, supporting the top layer of the coat. This will make the coat look fuller.

Blenders were created as thinners to thin out thick human hair. The dog groomers adopted thinners for thinning thick coats but discovered that they are an excellent blending tool to eliminate lines left from straight edged shears or clippers.

They leave a gently feathering finish blending the short fur into long or uncut fur without an obvious line. They can easily blend choppy textures into a smooth, seamless finish. Groomers can create a finish on any texture of fur that is so pleasing to look at that people can’t help but gaze at the dog or cat in wonder.

With anywhere from 26-52 teeth, they remove less fur than a chunker with every cut, so using a thumb action technique for cutting is the best way to use thinners. If you squeeze the blades too tight, the teeth can catch on the straight blade.

A must have for every groomer.
